As a lexicographer, I’m often asked, “What’s your favorite word?” This is a much more difficult question than it seems \u2014 it’s like asking someone who loves snow what their favorite snowflake is. I used to struggle to explain that my “favorite words” list at Wordnik is nearly two thousand words long, but now I generally give up and say that my “favorite” word is the word erinaceous<\/em>, which is usually defined as “of, pertaining to, or resembling a hedgehog.”<\/p>\n

So rather than give five favorite singleton words, I’d like to highlight five categories of words that I enjoy, with examples.<\/p>\n

1. Mismatched Meanings<\/h2>\n

I’m fond of the phenomenon where words sound terrible but mean beautiful things (or the reverse): pulchritude<\/em> being my favorite example \u2014 it means beauty<\/em>\u00a0but is itself a very ugly word; fucsia<\/em>\u00a0is a lovely color but an unpleasant word; and treacle<\/em> is a sweet substance but a sour word to say. (Some examples of the reverse \u2014 pretty words that mean terrible things \u2014 are oubliette<\/em>, diarrhea<\/em>, and macabre<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

2. -nym<\/h2>\n

I don’t think you’ll find a word-lover anywhere who doesn’t enjoy words that describe other words. A lot of these words end in –nym<\/em> (from the Greek root meaning \u201cname\u201d \u2014 and what are words but names for things?). Just about every name has a name \u2014 there’s hydronym<\/em>, for the name of a river or lake or any other body of water; there’s numeronym<\/em>, for a number-based word; euonym<\/em> or patronym<\/em>, any name that is well-suited to its bearer (and caconym<\/em>, for the reverse); troponym<\/em>, the name for a precise verb that describes the manner in which something is done (e.g., stroll<\/em> rather than walk)<\/em>;\u00a0and exonym<\/em>, a name given to a group that the group does not use for itself (e.g., Gypsy<\/em> is an exonym, because the people described as Gypsies<\/em> do not use that name for themselves, preferring Romany<\/em>, Roma<\/em>, and other terms). Another favorite word-for-words is semordnilap<\/em>, which is a word or phrase which spells a different word or phrase when reversed (e.g., semordnilap<\/em> is itself a semordnilap because when reversed, it spells palindromes<\/em>).<\/p>\n

3. Obscure Masculines<\/h2>\n

A smaller and more obscure category are terms that I like to call “obscure masculines.”\u00a0In English (and in the world) centuries of sexism meant that for a long time male terms for roles and professions usually took precedence, and the female term was the marked afterthought: actor\/actress<\/em>, waiter\/waitress<\/em>, priest\/priestess<\/em>, and so on. Many of these have now been either absorbed into the formerly male-only term (actor<\/em>) or replaced by a neutral term entirely (server<\/em>\u00a0for waiter\/waitress<\/em>), but there are a few words for male roles where the female is the default and the male the exception: ballerino<\/em>\u00a0(for a male ballet performer, much less common than ballerina<\/em>); divo<\/em>\u00a0(a jocular term for a male diva); and d\u00e9butant<\/em>\u00a0(a male … d\u00e9butante). This category includes more blatant terms and blends: man-midwife<\/em>\u00a0(exactly what it sounds like) and man-<\/em> blend words like mandals<\/em>\u00a0(sandals worn by men) and mankini<\/em> (a bikini \u2014 or I suppose really a monokini <\/em>\u2014 worn by men).<\/p>\n

4. Genres of Music<\/h2>\n

Some of the most inventive and interesting words I come across are terms for genres of music: they tend to be fun-sounding (zydeco<\/em>, skiffle<\/em>, crunk<\/em>, rockabilly<\/em>, gabber<\/em>) and these terms also tend to take a small number of suffixes and expand upon them. For instance, there are lots of -core<\/em> genres: slowcore<\/em>, taqwacore<\/em>, nerdcore<\/em>, mallcore<\/em>, etc., as well as -pop<\/em> genres: Afropop<\/em>, Britpop<\/em>, bitpop<\/em>, Cantopop<\/em>, among others; and -wave<\/em>: chillwave<\/em>, coldwave<\/em>, darkwave<\/em>, and so on.<\/p>\n

5. Ghost Words<\/h2>\n

Probably the most unlikely category of favorite words for a lexicographer to have are ghost words: words that aren’t words at all, but that have been mistakenly entered into dictionaries anyway. Probably the most famous of these is dord<\/em>, which was entered into the second edition of Merriam-Webster’s New International Dictionary<\/em> in 1934, defined as “density.”\u00a0No such word as dord<\/em> actually existed \u2014 it was an error for D or d <\/em>\u2014 that is, that the letter D<\/em>, either as a capital or lower-case, could be used as an abbreviation for “density.” (The error was discovered in 1939 \u2014 remarkably quickly for that era of lexicography \u2014 and was corrected in most editions shortly thereafter.) There are quite of few of these \u2014 another favorite is topinch<\/em>, a mistake for to pinch<\/em> (a mistake in an edition of Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor<\/em>) and momblishness<\/em> (defined as muttering talk<\/em> but a mistake in both transcription and possibly translation for an old French word for forget-me-not<\/em>).<\/p>\n
