Dance words like these lead vibrant double lives, appearing throughout American slang, sayings, and songs. In honor of International Dance Day (April 29), we\u2019re telling the stories of five of our favorites.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E3WXSjio7Og?wmode=opaque&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">1. Hustle<\/h2>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><em>\u201cHustle up!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">For a word associated with hard work and effort, it stands to reason that \u201chustle\u201d juggles an impressive number of definitions. As a verb (according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/hustle\">Merriam-Webster<\/a>), it can mean to \u201cjostle, shove,\u201d or \u201cconvey forcibly\u201d; to \u201chasten\u201d or \u201churry\u201d; or \u201cto make strenuous efforts to obtain\u201d (either legally or by more underhanded means). It\u2019s often used as a noun as well, as in \u201cyou can\u2019t deny her hustle\u201d or \u201cthe hustle and bustle of city life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cHustle\u201d picked up yet another meaning in the 1970s, when people started using it to describe a particular partner dance being developed in New York City nightclubs. This flashy new dance was done to disco music and was characterized by speed, syncopation, and showy spins for both the leader and the follower. Though it\u2019s hard to determine exactly when the dance was named or who named it, it\u2019s certainly apt: the energy and motion in this multitasking verb\/noun fit this high speed dance to a T.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Julianne and Derek Hough performing the Jive\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7KChBpxOA1M?start=39&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">2. Jive<\/h2>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><em>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t jive with me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">The word \u201cjive\u201d captures the spirit of swing. It refers to a style of dance developed by African Americans in the early 1930s and 40s, as well as the jazz music that accompanied these dancers. Jive is related to other swing dances like Lindy Hop and Jitterbug, and it features all kinds of high-energy flicks, kicks, and spins. It is still danced socially and competitively, both in ballroom dance competitions and on the popular TV series <em>Dancing with the Stars.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Early non-dance uses of the word indicate \u201cglib, deceptive, or foolish talk\u201d or specialized jargon. Given that jive songs usually had witty, suggestive lyrics, these definitions are very much in the spirit of the dance. However, \u201cjive\u201d also picked up another, unrelated meaning. When \u201cjive\u201d entered the American lexicon, people began confusing it for \u201cjibe\u201d (meaning \u201cto agree or correspond\u201d). \u201cJive\u201d is often still used in this way, as in \u201cthat doesn\u2019t jive with my memory of things\u201d or \u201cyour story doesn\u2019t jive with the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2nr8UcHi2xE?wmode=opaque&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"854\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">3. Waltz<\/h2>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><em>\u201cYou think you can just waltz right in here?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">First recorded in the 1790s, the term for this whirling, circular dance comes from the German word <em>walzen<\/em>, which means \u201cto turn.\u201d This dance, which now has a rather formal, respectable reputation, was actually quite a scandal when it first emerged. Take this critique, from an 1833 manners guide called <em>The Gentleman and Lady\u2019s Book<\/em>: \u201cThe waltz is a dance of quite too loose a character, and unmarried ladies should refrain from it altogether.\u201d Criticisms like this, largely aimed at the women who participated in this dance, stemmed from the dance\u2019s close embrace and the vigorous spinning involved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Since this dance\u2019s inception in the 18th century, the word \u201cwaltz\u201d has gained a dizzying variety of meanings. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/waltz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Merriam-Webster<\/a> includes several uses of the word, including \u201cto advance easily and successfully\u201d (as in \u201cwaltzing through life\u201d) and \u201cto approach boldly\u201d (as in \u201cYou can\u2019t just waltz up and introduce yourself like that.\u201d). These seemingly disparate meanings \u2014\u00a0indicating ease and boldness simultaneously\u2014 reflect the many faces of the dance, which can be both soft and slow and vigorous and strong.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w6xYGG8ZkV8?wmode=opaque&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"854\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">4. Fandango<\/h2>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><em>\u201cScaramouch, scaramouch, will you do the fandango?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">When you hear the word \u201cfandango,\u201d you probably think of one of two things: the popular movie ticket website, and Queen\u2019s legendary song \u201cBohemian Rhapsody.\u201d Long before Freddie Mercury and the internet, however, the \u201cfandango\u201d was a courtship dance performed in 18th-century Spain. A pair of dancers tease and pursue each other with energetic steps and movements, typically accompanied by guitar music and castanets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">The word \u201cfandango\u201d picked up some additional meanings when it entered the American English lexicon. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/fandango\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Merriam-Webster<\/a> gives \u201ctomfoolery\u201d as a secondary definition. Due to its close relation to such an extravagant dance, the word can also indicate a big fuss or quarrel.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eWjWg92kBQc?wmode=opaque&amp;enablejsapi=1\" width=\"854\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">5. Tango<\/h2>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><em>\u201cIt takes two to tango.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cTango\u201d can describe a variety of dances, from the sultry Argentine Tango, recognizable by its intricate footwork, close embrace, and foot flicks, to the standard ballroom tango, where the leader and follower use large, commanding steps to fly down the floor. The word probably gets the most use in its idiomatic sense, though: \u201cit takes two to tango.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">This saying was popularized in the 1952 song \u201cTakes Two to Tango,\u201d written by Al Hoffman and Dick Manning. The tune was recorded by artists like Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong and features witty verses like this one, from the Ray Charles recording:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px; white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u201cYou can get very old by yourself<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Catch a fish or a cold by yourself<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Dig a ditch or strike it rich all by yourself<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px; white-space: pre-wrap;\">There are lots of things that you can do alone<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 80px; white-space: pre-wrap;\">But it takes two to tango\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Tango also leads a covert third life as part of something called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/declassified_136216.htm\/\">NATO phonetic alphabet<\/a>. This radiotelephonic spelling alphabet is a set of words that stand in for each letter of the English alphabet, from Alpha to Zulu.
