{"id":2695,"date":"2020-07-09T13:59:53","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T17:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/planetwordmuseum.org\/?p=2695"},"modified":"2025-03-12T17:20:44","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T21:20:44","slug":"from-the-founder-a-summer-status-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planetwordmuseum.org\/from-the-founder-a-summer-status-update\/","title":{"rendered":"A Summer Status Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">Stepping inside the Franklin School these days is like walking into a surround-sound of onomatopoeia!\u00a0 Buzzing, clanging, banging, and whooshing envelop us as we finish base-building work and the final exhibit installation.\u00a0 The entry courtyard and green roof have been planted, the construction fence removed, and the last coats of plaster and frescoes applied. Last week we passed our final building inspection, so we should soon receive our Certificate of Occupancy. Then in August we will begin testing, debugging, and stress-testing the exhibit software to ensure it works as intended. At long last, we will get to see and experience the exhibits we\u2019ve only been imagining for the last two and a half years!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9701\" style=\"width: 1121px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9701\" class=\"wp-image-9701 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/planetwordmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Gallery-0-Panoramic-R-Latoff.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1111\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/planetwordmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Gallery-0-Panoramic-R-Latoff.jpg 1111w, https:\/\/planetwordmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Gallery-0-Panoramic-R-Latoff-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/planetwordmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Gallery-0-Panoramic-R-Latoff-768x397.jpg 768w, https:\/\/planetwordmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Gallery-0-Panoramic-R-Latoff-1024x530.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1111px) 100vw, 1111px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The massive globe that anchors\u00a0The Spoken World\u00a0was a feat of engineering! Beyond it, you can faintly see the historic frescoes mid-restoration.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"\">But we\u2019re not satisfied with stopping there.\u00a0 We\u2019re taking this extra time \u2014 \u201cthank you,\u201d Covid-19 \u2014 to develop some additional activities for the Planet Word line-up.\u00a0 Supplementing our 10 main gallery experiences, we had already created 17 interactive activities about important word-related topics, such as forensic linguistics, animal communications, taboo language, linguistic bias, constructed languages, and more.\u00a0 Now we\u2019ll add two more interactive activities: an exploration of news literacy, to fill a void created by the closing of the Newseum, and the timely and fraught topic of hate speech: What it is? Why do people use it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">With the museum doors still closed to visitors, we recognize the urgency of fulfilling our ever-more important mission: renewing and inspiring a love of words, language, and reading in order to bolster democracy \u2014 especially now that we see the inequities and shortcomings of distance learning, particularly regarding early literacy. To that end, we are planning more online programming, working with partners who share our values, especially inclusivity, to promote literacy and to share the joy of words.
