Try asking them to write their own book to get some ideas about what books to look for.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>STEP 1: GATHER MATERIALS<\/h3>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumb-image loaded alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/images.squarespace-cdn.com\/content\/v1\/581395269f7456aaccef5158\/1598025764374-W6OIQW5FRA6JPADPFAHL\/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kNiEM88mrzHRsd1mQ3bxVct7gQa3H78H3Y0txjaiv_0fDoOvxcdMmMKkDsyUqMSsMWxHk725yiiHCCLfrh8O1z4YTzHvnKhyp6Da-NYroOW3ZGjoBKy3azqku80C789l0s0XaMNjCqAzRibjnE_wBlkZ2axuMlPfqFLWy-3Tjp4nKScCHg1XF4aLsQJlo6oYbA\/Paper+scissors+and+crayons%2C+supplies?format=2500w\" alt=\"Paper scissors and crayons, supplies\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/>\n<p class=\"\">The supplies are simple:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>One standard 8.5\u201dx11\u201d sheet of paper<\/li>\n<li>Small amount of thicker paper, cardstock, or cardboard<\/li>\n<li>Scissors<\/li>\n<li>Ruler<\/li>\n<li>Glue or tape<\/li>\n<li>Marker or something else to write with<\/li>\n<li>Crayons or something else to color with<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>STEP 2: MAKE THE PAGES<\/h3>\n<p>Cut your piece of paper in half lengthwise so that you have two long pieces of paper. Fold each piece of paper in half, then fold the ends in to touch in the middle. Unfold. The creases should leave you with four rectangles for each piece of paper. Glue the two pieces together and re-fold to make one long accordion fold. An old file folder will do nicely. They can be creative as they like. Maybe they have a story they\u2019re just waiting to write, an idea that\u2019s been on their minds. For a younger child, consider creating prompts they can fill out themselves: Perhaps they\u2019d like to draw themselves and their family in a self-portrait, or write or draw about their favorite sport or hobby. Where would they like to travel? Use what they wrote to spark ideas about what your child might like to read. You can ask your local children\u2019s librarian for more ideas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>STEP 6: LEARN MORE<\/h3>\n<p>Experts agree that representation in children\u2019s literature makes a difference.
